Apple crisp is the quintessential fall dessert – easy, delicious, and it makes your entire house smell like autumn. The scent of it is so iconic that corporations have been trying to replicate it in candles and hand soaps for decades.
This Keto Apple Crisp will give you all of the same homey, comforting smells and flavors of the classic – without the carbs and gluten.
If you’re calling a recipe a keto apple crisp, then I believe there should be some apples in it. I am definitely not on board with replacing all of the apples with squash or jicama or some other lower carb ingredient other than apples as some people do.
That being said, a traditional apple crisp, even made without sugar will have more carbs than is prudent on a keto diet due to the apples alone.
So to make this apple crisp low carb, I combined apples and summer squash in the filling, which provides the right flavor and texture, and just enough bites of real apple mixed in to give you the real apple crisp aroma and experience when eating it – and I think it worked really well!
You can use all zucchini or all yellow summer squash – or a combination of both in this keto apple crisp. I do recommend peeling it if you are using zucchini because those green skins will throw off the look of it, and mentally I think it’s harder to convince yourself that it’s all apples when you can clearly see the zucchini skin.
But maybe that’s just me.
The yellow squash I didn’t bother peeling, but if you really want to fool your brain when eating this keto apple crisp, then I’d peel those too. Also choose smaller squash so that you don’t have a lot of seeds in them which will also become a visual and textural issue in the final result.

Can you eat apples on keto?
I think almost anything can be fit into the keto diet if you manage your carbs correctly – and apples are no exception. While apples, like most fruits, are high in sugar, they can be consumed on the keto diet in small quantities. It’s important to track your macros and also to plan accordingly. If you are going to eat 10 carbs of apple in a day, then you want to make sure you are having less carbs at other meals so you can still reach your goal of 20g per less a day to stay in ketosis.
So it’s not something I’d eat on the regular, but as a special treat and with a little planning yes, you can have apple on the keto diet.
Does it matter what kind of apples you use?
The sugar content in apples does vary by type, and a Granny Smith apple is going to have the least amount by a few grams per serving. You can use other apples with a negligible difference, but I’d stay away from Fuji or other very sweet varieties if you can if you’re eating keto.
What’s the difference between and crisp and a crumble or cobbler?
While very similar, and none of them having a bottom crust, a crisp or crumble will have a streusel-like crumb topping (traditionally containing oats for texture) whereas a cobbler has a sturdier topping that is usually thicker and almost biscuit-like.
You can serve this keto apple crisp either warm or cold – it’s truly delicious either way.
It can be eaten alone, or with sugar free whipped cream, or sugar free vanilla ice cream (I like Rebel brand) as shown.
This keto apple crisp can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week in the refrigerator or for up to 3 months in the freezer. I recommend freezing it before baking to keep the crisp texture of the topping intact.

This Keto Apple Crisp uses some apple for authenticity in flavor and texture, but also some squash to bulk it up without the carbs. Gluten free and low carb.
For the Filling:
- 1 1/2 cups peeled and chopped apples (1/2 inch dice)
- 2 1/2 cups chopped zucchini or summer squash, peeled if desired
- 1/2 cup Lakanto golden sweetener
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
For the topping:
5 tablespoons butter, melted
1 cup almond flour
1 teaspoon psyllium husk powder
2 tablespoons hemp seeds
3 tablespoons chopped walnuts
1/3 cup lakanto golden
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon maple extract (or vanilla extract)
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Combine the filling ingredients in a large bowl and stir well.
- Transfer to a 9 x 9 (or similar sized) baking dish.
- Combine the topping ingredients in a small bowl and stir well.
- Crumble over the apple filling in the baking dish.
- Place in the oven on the bottom rack (so the topping doesn’t get too dark.)
- Bake for 30 minutes or until the filling is bubbling and the apples are fork tender.
- Remove and serve warm.
